Ghana and South Africa have made a historic move to boost
their bilateral relations and tourism by signing a visa waiver agreement for
their passport holders. This means that citizens of both countries can travel
to each other’s territory without the hassle of applying for a visa.
On Friday, October 13, 2023, Ghana's Ministry of Foreign
Affairs and Regional Integration released a statement announcing the agreement.
According to the statement, the agreement will go into effect on November 1,
2023, and travelers will be able to enter, exit, and remain on the territory of
both nations for a total of up to 90 days without having to look for employment.
The statement added that the visa waiver agreement is a
significant milestone in the diplomatic relations between Ghana and South
Africa, which have been cordial and friendly since the end of apartheid in
South Africa. The two nations have a strong commitment to regional integration
and continental unification, as well as shared ideals of democracy, human
rights, the rule of law, and good governance.
The visa waiver agreement is also expected to enhance
trade, investment, tourism and cultural exchanges between Ghana and South
Africa, which are both major economies in Africa. The gross domestic product
(GDP) of South Africa was $282.59 billion in 2020, compared to $67.07 billion

resources for commodities including gold, cocoa, oil, diamonds, minerals,
