DISREGARD RUMORS OF CHINESE MEN INVOLVED IN KANTAMANTO FIRE – FAKE NEWS
In the aftermath of the devastating fire outbreak at Kantamanto, misleading rumors have begun circulating online, falsely implicating Chinese nationals and a prominent Ghanaian politician in the incident. One of the main sources of this disinformation is a social media account, @NEWSGH360, which posted a tweet containing a picture of some Chinese businessmen alongside Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the former Deputy Minister of Education and a current Member of Parliament for the North Tongu constituency.

The tweet baselessly suggested that these individuals had something to do with the fire. However, the truth is far from these claims.
The image in question is entirely unrelated to the Kantamanto fire. It was taken during a business meeting concerning bioethanol manufacturing in the North Tongu constituency. This meeting, facilitated by Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, focused on investment opportunities and had no connection whatsoever to the fire outbreak. The photo, originally published on Ablakwa’s official website, was taken out of context and misused by @NEWSGH360 to fuel false narratives.
Political Propaganda Escalates

Shortly after the initial post, another individual, @MrIrish3, an NPP-affiliated Twitter (X) user, amplified the rumor. He claimed that the Chinese men in the photo were seen at Kantamanto evaluating the land and insinuated that they were involved in a plot to burn the market for land acquisition. These accusations were nothing more than fabricated political propaganda aimed at tarnishing Ablakwa’s reputation as his party, the NDC, gains momentum ahead of upcoming elections.
Such baseless allegations only serve to inflame tensions and distract from the pressing need to uncover the actual cause of the fire.
The spread of this fake news has already caused significant harm. Reports have emerged of market women attacking Chinese individuals in the area, believing them to be involved in the fire. The businessman featured in the misused photo is also at risk of being targeted due to this misinformation. This highlights the dangerous impact of spreading unverified and false information.
A Call for Responsibility
It is imperative for @NEWSGH360 and @MrIrish3 to take down these defamatory posts immediately and issue public apologies to prevent further harm. Failure to do so could result in legal consequences, including defamation lawsuits and damages.
Spreading false rumors not only jeopardizes the safety of innocent individuals but also undermines public trust. As this situation demonstrates, rumors spread faster than the truth. It is, therefore, crucial for everyone to verify information before sharing it online.
As of now, the actual cause of the fire at Kantamanto remains unknown. Authorities must focus on conducting thorough investigations to determine what led to the disaster and implement measures to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
Help combat misinformation by sharing the truth. This fire outbreak is a tragedy that requires unity, not division or baseless accusations. Let us stand together to support those affected and ensure accountability where it is truly due.
